Job Description:

We are currently seeking an Extension Officer (Extensive Livestock Systems), located in the Mackay region of QLD.

Key Tasks, Duties & Responsibilities:

As our Extension Officer (Extensive Livestock Systems) you will:

  • Be part of DPI's commitment to Reef 2050 by working within the ReefPlan Grazing Extension Support Project Team. Supported by the Team, you will work in partnership with beef producers to increase the implementation of profitable and productive grazing and herd management practices aimed at improving water quality primarily within the Burdekin catchment.

  • Enhance beef producer knowledge of key performance indicators of their businesses, and assist to identify grazing, production and business strategies to increase resilience to seasonal variability.

  • Assist in developing technical and information materials and training. Regular travel to maintain one on one producer engagement to ensure follow-up of activities that assist with the adoption of best management practice across livestock businesses.

  • Improve producer knowledge to efficiently manage and add value to their businesses by identifying the significant drivers of profitability and sustainability specific to their operations.

  • Actively contribute to the monitoring and reporting of the impact and value of Departmental services and projects to beef producers.

  • Supported by professional development activities, understand and use a range of extension methodologies, including producer group, face to face, as well as webbased webinars and on-line training, to build relationships with stakeholders to achieve improved enterprise performance and environmental outcomes.

  • In conjunction with other Team members, assist producers to develop technically sound on-farm projects and actions which deliver land management and productivity outcomes.

  • To contribute to the continued improvement of DPI's extension products.

  • Contribute to project deliverables of a high standard and that influence adoption by industry.

  • Adhere to project and governance processes within a leading RD&E organisation.

  • The position will include travel for extended periods across regional and remote Queensland. This may include out of hours work and occasional weekend work.

Job Requirements:

  • It is a mandatory requirement for a professional officer to possess an Australian Bachelor degree (AQF level 7 or equivalent) or higher in Animal, Agricultural or Environmental Science from a recognised tertiary institution.

  • Commitment to obtaining vaccination or provision of evidence of prior immunity to Q fever will be required prior to starting

  • A current “C” class drivers licence
