Spyglass Beef Research Facility covers 38,300 hectares. It is approximately 110km north of Charters
Towers on the Gregory Development Road and 130km west of Townsville via the Hervey Range Road.

This facility plays a leading role into research to advance tropical and subtropical beef production and
ecosystem management, as well as hosting development, extension, education and training programs.
These are vital for the future profitability and sustainability of Queensland’s beef industry.

Job Description:

Are you keen to demonstrate your all-round abilities and interest in the beef industry, including the pasture feedbase resources that underpin it? This opportunity will have you working in the experimental aspects of cattle, pasture feed base and land rehabilitation experiments, primarily on the DAF Spyglass Beef Research Facility approximately an hour's drive north of Charters Towers .

Key Tasks, Duties & Responsibilities:

As our Technical Officer (Extensive Livestock Systems), you will:


Experimental Support to Research Projects:

  • Work in the experimental aspects of cattle, pasture feed base and land rehabilitation experiments, primarily on the DAF Spyglass Beef Research Facility located 110km north of Charters Towers and provide technical support to other research in the region.

  • Liaise with DAF and collaborating scientists, technical staff, research station staff and grazier co-operators to conduct and service project activities efficiently.


Experimental Protocol Adherence:

  • With supervision, follow experimental protocols to a high standard.

  • Conduct timely data collection and maintenance of accurate records for pasture and beef cattle experiments and demonstrations including:

  • pasture, vegetation and land condition monitoring and assessment using scientific methods

  • mustering and paddock monitoring using motorcycles/buggies; paddock capture of new calves and recording of calving data; yard handling of cattle and measurement of performance traits; preparation, feeding and recording of supplement intakes

  • collection, processing, and delivery of samples for analysis

  • ensuring the scientific integrity of data; perform accurate spreadsheet/database recording and data management, basic data analysis and tabulation for reporting to project leaders

  • maintenance of scientific and team allocated equipment

  • assisting in site resource establishment and maintenance, and other duties as directed


Team Collaboration:

  • Actively participate in a multidisciplinary team.

  • Build effective working relationships with DAF, collaborating scientists, technical staff, research station staff, and grazier co-operators to efficiently conduct project

Job Requirements:

Mandatory qualifications

  • A technical officer must have a Diploma, equivalent or higher in Applied Science, Rural or Agricultural Science or similar field relevant to the position from a recognised tertiary institution.

  • Vaccination or immunity to Q fever will be required. Commitment to obtain vaccination or evidence of prior vaccination will be required prior to starting with Agri-Science Queensland.


Desirable Attributes:

  • Understanding of the Queensland and/or Northern Australia beef industry.

  • Ability to operate machinery used in implementing and maintaining field trials. Possessing additional heavy machinery licenses would be advantageous but is not essential.

  • Knowledge or ability in construction for establishing and maintaining research infrastructure (e.g., fencing, water supplies).

  • Capability to install and service data logging equipment (e.g., soil moisture, weather, cattle weights) at research locations.


Licences and registrations/ Skills

  • Hold a current “C” class manual driver’s license.

Job Benefits:

In addition to the $69,679 - $82,108 salary, the following attractive incentives are available for the successful applicant:

  • Rural Area Incentive Scheme & Locality Allowance of $85 (where employee has dependants), or $42.50 per fortnight, if the successful applicant has no dependents;

  • Accommodation allowance of $40.00 per fortnight where government housing is not provided.
