Job Description:

  • Reporting to the Manager, the Supervisor Irrigation will supervisor a team of Farm Hands to meet the operational requirements of the orchard or crop maintenance and productivity.

  • The role is located at our Almond Farm near the township of Hillston, NSW.

  • The position requires a diverse range of skills across the Farm, focussing on the irrigation requirements of the orchard or cropping plan, 

  • The role offers a broad range of tasks including operating machinery, spraying and maintaining the irrigation and associated equipment. 

  • The role involves substantial outdoor work, in all weather conditions, the handling of chemicals and some lifting

Key Tasks, Duties & Responsibilities:

Leadership

  • Lead and develop an effective and productive team

  • Provide guidance and advice to team members under your responsibility, ensuring a focus on continuous improvement

  • Provide regular and timely coaching to all team members

  • Conduct both formal and informal appraisals and feedback for all team members.

  • Demonstrating on a daily basis personal behaviour that uphold our values and driving these values within the business.


Irrigation

  • To assist the Manager in reporting all noticeable problems, such as trees in poor health, irrigation leaks, and poor water delivery.

  • To monitor irrigation and fertigation in the orchard under the guidance of the Manager and within the company horticultural guidelines and requirements.

  • To assist in the maintenance of all bore/ pump usage and standing water level records in compliance with data recording requirements of the company.

  • Repair and inspect lines, valves, install new drip and sprinkler parts as required; replacing old equipment for effective water distribution.


Maintenance

  • General tree care including pruning, staking etc.

  • To assist in ongoing weed management program to minimise their impact on the property. This includes spot spraying around valves, fence lines, buildings, waste areas and trees.

  • To ensure the plants are in good health. Spot spray weeds, remove/prune dead branches, tree guard maintenance, re-tie trees to stakes where required and replant missing trees.

  • Record dead, missing sick or replanted trees.


Safety

  • The Role will be required to follow structured work programs including adhering to company policies and procedures and also understand obligations under legislation relevant to the Environment and Occupational Health and Safety with respect to:

  • The use all PPE provided as directed and in particular with the handling of chemicals.

  • To work safely using all OH&S guidelines and SWP’s and to assist the farm manager/supervisor in reporting safety concerns.


Machinery Operations

  • Operate machinery, tractors and implements in line with recommended guidelines to ensure that both tractor and implement operate in an efficient and safe manner

  • Ensure all machinery that is utilised is serviced and greased regularly in line with a daily maintenance schedule

  • Ensure machinery under your control is kept in a clean tidy and safe working condition and is presented to the workshop in a condition suitable for servicing as determined by the Supervisor or Mechanic.


Business Improvement

  • Seek productivity gains and innovations that lead to improved team performance

  • Seek to create efficiencies and the effective use of consumables and stock management

  • Continuous and proactive outlook to improving business through planning, recording and analysing costs with continual improvement


Other Duties

  • Gain and maintain a sound knowledge of company policies, procedures and training programs

  • Assist and liaise with the Manager / Supervisor in employee management, training, equipping, resourcing

  • Undertake all other duties as required or directed by the Manager, or other senior manager

Job Requirements:

  • People management skills, including team building, and coaching.

  • Experience in the operation and management of irrigation systems in a horticulture cropping environment

  • Solid written and verbal communication skills

  • A firm commitment to working safely in team environment

  • Adaptability and flexibility to changing work environments and requirements

  • Ability to identify opportunities for innovation and improvement in farm management practices.

  • Experience in operation of electronically managed and complex irrigation systems

  • Ability to create solutions and problem solving

  • Ability to build trust and rapport with colleagues, contractors and customers
