Job Description:

An outstanding opportunity exists for a suitably qualified and experienced person to join the Northern Territory’s Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade as the Assistant Farm Manager at the Douglas Daly Research Farm.


Located 200km southwest of Darwin, situated between the Douglas and the iconic Daly Rivers, the Douglas Daly Research Farm is a mixed farming research and demonstration facility focusing on beef cattle production and improved pasture development and performance.

Key Tasks, Duties & Responsibilities:

As Assistant Farm Manager you will:

  • Assist the Farm Manager to coordinate and manage farm operations, and to supervise and direct farm staff.

  • Undertake day-to-day work of the research farm, including livestock and rangeland management, cropping and irrigated

  • production, and operating and maintaining machinery and equipment.

  • Assist the Farm Manager in the safe and efficient operation of the Douglas Daly Research Farm, including the

  • development and implementation of WHS initiatives which positively encourage the workplace safety culture.

  • Assist in the implementation of long-term development plans of the research farm.

  • Facilitate research and extension programs and be involved in extension activities such as field days and demonstrations.

  • Undertake accurate data collecting and recording activities and maintain station records.

Job Requirements:

Esssential Criteria: 

1. An appropriate Degree or Diploma in Agriculture or related field, and / or considerable relevant experience.

2. Demonstrated experience in cattle station and mixed farming management operations including land preparation,

cropping, chemical application, weed management, cattle handling, mustering, and animal husbandry practices.

3. Ability to operate and maintain a wide range of farm machinery and equipment used in agricultural production.

4. Demonstrated management and supervisory skills, and ability to work with limited supervision.

5. Ability to interact positively with the public, contractors and government staff working on the farm.

6. Demonstrated workplace health and safety leadership and proven ability to assist with managing workplace risks and promoting a safety culture.

7. Drive a 4WD vehicle.


Desirable

1. Hold a current HR NT drivers licence.

2. Hold a current First Aid Certificate or have the ability to obtain and maintain this qualification.

3. Hold a ChemCert or SmarTrain Certificate or have the ability to obtain and maintain this qualification.
