An outstanding opportunity exists for a suitably qualified and experienced person to join the Alice Springs and Old Man Plains Research Farms as a Technical Officer.
Located on the outskirts of Alice Springs, the Research Farms are mixed farming research and demonstration facilities focusing on beef cattle production, horticultural trials and best practice semi-arid rangeland management.

Job Description:
You will assist senior staff to undertake the daily farm activities at the AZRI (Arid Zone Research Institute) and Old Man Plains Research Farms with an emphasis on the day-to-day maintenance and management of facilities, grounds, equipment, livestock and crops.

Key Tasks, Duties & Responsibilities:
Safe operation and maintenance of farm machinery and equipment.
Livestock care and handling as directed, including checks on livestock, and checks on stock water supply.
Horticulture maintenance, including irrigation checks/repairs, weed control and pruning.
Infrastructure maintenance, such as fences, yards, water supply, weed control and grading tracks and fire breaks.
Grounds maintenance at AZRI including lawns and garden beds: mowing, slashing, irrigation, weeding and pruning.
Assist with research farm infrastructure development activities: yards, fencing and water supply.
Assist with recording data for farm records and assist with extension activities such as field days
This position works outside of standard hours when required, including early, late and weekend work.
Job Requirements:
Essential
An appropriate Qualification in Agriculture or a related field, and/or considerable relevant experience.
Experience with farm operations, livestock handling, data collection, horticulture and general farming practices.
Proven experience with maintaining facilities and infrastructure, such as fencing, welding, grading and poly-pipe repairs.
Proven experience with operating and maintaining a variety of farm machinery and equipment.
A positive team-oriented approach and ability to work effectively with limited supervision, a willingness to interact positively with
people of diverse cultures, and an ability to follow directions and procedures.
Ability to communicate effectively in person and in writing, to use farm technology and use office computers for recording and sharing
information.
A sound understanding of safe work practices around machinery, livestock, farming activities and workshops.
Valid driver’s licence and ability to drive a manual 4WD.
Desirable
Hold a current Heavy Rigid driver’s licence and/or experience operating a grader.
Hold a current First Aid Certificate or have the ability to obtain.
Hold a ChemCert or SmarTrain Certificate or have the ability to obtain.
