Job Description

  • As part of the Research Farm Team, the Beef Cattle Research Officer will assist the Farm Manager in the conduct of Livestock Industries research trials, contribute to the daily operation of the Research Station and assist with the preparation and implementation of extension programs to promote the sustainable development of the NT Pastoral Industry.

  • The Victoria River Research Station provides facilities to conduct agricultural research and extension. This position is based at Victoria River Research Station, but also can include travel to remote locations for extended periods.

Key Tasks, Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Assist the Farm Manager in conducting cattle research projects, station maintenance and development work.

  2. Undertake day-to-day work of the Research Station, including livestock and rangeland management and operating and maintaining machinery, equipment, fences and water supply.

  3. Assist with collecting and recording research data, and in maintaining station records.

  4. Assist with extension activities such as field days and demonstrations.

Job Requirements

Essential 

  1. An appropriate Degree in agricultural, animal science or equivalent.

  2. Demonstrated experience in research techniques applicable to extensive pastoral operations.

  3. Demonstrated experience with cattle handling, mustering, and daily farm management practices such as fencing and machinery operation.

  4. Experience in collection, collation, entering and processing of research data related to livestock production and native pastures, both as a team member and on occasion project manager.

  5. Demonstrated interpersonal, written and oral communication skills and proven ability to interact positively with producers, colleagues and government personnel.

  6. Current driver’s licence and ability to carry out field work under challenging conditions for extended periods.

  7. Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team with proven good organisational and time management skills.

 

Desirable

  1. Hold a current HR NT drivers’ licence and drive a 4WD vehicle.

  2. Experience related to beef cattle research in extensive pastoral regions, particularly the tropical areas of northern Australia.
