We are looking for full-time permanent Backgrounding Livestock Hands to join our friendly team based at New Norcia Farm and Koojan Downs Farm.

Please note that these positions are permanent roles so are not suitable for those on short term /working holiday visas

Within this role you will perform daily operations related to cattle husbandry, including feeding and cattle movements. Responsibilities include conducting regular paddock checks to monitor animal health and observations of grazing management. Additionally, maintaining infrastructure, such as fencing and watering systems. This position is vital for maintaining animal welfare and ensuring property operations run smoothly.

The Backgrounding Properties:

  • New Norcia Farm is located next to the historic township of New Norcia.  It is a 7975ha property which has a frontage to the Moore River and is located 132km north of Perth in Western Australia.

  • Koojan Downs Farm: is located 30kms from Moora, 160kms north of Perth in Western Australia and is a 10,000ha property.

Key Tasks, Duties & Responsibilities

  • Daily paddock checks.

  • Carry out horse and cattle husbandry practices, fencing, machinery and general property maintenance skills.

  • Mustering and cattle processing.

  • Induction of livestock into backgrounding, following correct induction management procedures and relevant livestock work instructions.

  • Unloading, loading, scanning, drafting and weighing of cattle.

  • All aspects of cattle and horse husbandry use low-stress stock handling techniques and prioritise animal welfare, including their handling and veterinary treatments.

  • Ensuring water troughs are maintained at all times.

  • Other duties as required.

Job Requirements

  • Good horse-riding skills along with basic level horsemanship.

  • Previous experience of working in an intensive livestock handling operation preferred.

  • Hold a current manual driver’s licence.

  • Basic computer skills.

  • ​An ability to record information and effectively communicate within the workplace.

  • Basic level cattlemanship knowledge.

  • Knowledge of intensive livestock production systems.

  • Ability to work alone and in a team environment.

  • Available to work rostered weekends.

  • Hold a current manual driver’s licence.

  • Strong focus on safety, animal welfare and bio-security standards.

  • Physically fit to meet the inherent requirements of the role, including manual handling tasks.
