Job Description

  • Pastoral Partners Australia (PPA) is looking to appoint a skilled Station Hand/Caretaker to join our team on a full-time basis.

  • The successful applicant will have good interpersonal, relationship building and communication skills, together with a desire to work within an emerging sector. To be successful in this role, the applicant must be able to work independently and manage competing priorities to meet deadlines and objectives.

  • The position, based on property south of Bollon, will work to support Farm Managers across all PPA owned properties with a direct reporting line to our manager at Tippendale and will be integral to supporting the PPA team and being a key enabler to achieving success.

Key Tasks, Duties & Responsibilities

We do not own the animals that graze on our properties - we agist them out. So the station hand won't have to do mustering, but may need to assist the agistee so that they can get their mustering done.

  • Can perform cattle husbandry tasks, including:
    • Perform branding, castration, dehorning, and implanting of growth promotants torequired company standard.

    • Condition score cattle.

    • Estimate weights of cattle.

    • Weigh & record live weights of cattle.

    • Determine Health status of cattle.

    • Carry out established breeding plans.

    • Demonstrate ability to plan a muster for a paddock.

    • Load & Unload cattle without supervision.

  • Can repair plant and equipment, including:

    • Install & operate small engines, pumps and motorised equipment.

    • Can perform basic arc and oxy-acetylene welding tasks.

    • Can perform daily and routine checks, adjustment and maintenance of stationvehicles.

  • Can perform routine maintenance to stock water supply equipment, including:

    • Pulling bores and syphon pumps.

  • Can manage stock control structures, including:

    • Design and construct fencing.

  • Can perform basic property management, including:

    • Monitoring weather conditions.

    • Observe and report on land and environmental conditions on the property.

    • Determining herd health and welfare strategies.

    • Implementing stock husbandry practices.

  • Can perform domestic duties, including:

    • Butchering a complete beast with limited supervision.

    • Able to plan and cook a basic nutritious camp meal.

Job Requirements

Key competencies for the role include but are not limited to:

  • Has at least 4 or more years’ experience in the industry.

  • Has well developed skills in speaking, listening, literacy and numeracy.

  • Can undertake the normal duties without supervision.

  • Can plan daily work routines.

  • Can follow OH&S procedures.

  • Has completed a Certificate III traineeship or can display equivalent competencies.

  • Can communicate effectively with other staff, including record keeping
