The Station Hand is a hands-on position working as a part of the livestock team and contributing to overall station operation, maintenance and repairs.
Murray Downs is approximately 400km north of Alice Springs, 40km east of the Stuart Highway.
The station comprises 559,500ha on the lower Barkly Downs Region of the NT.
1. Stock (cattle) Welfare & Performance – herd health, fertility, nutrition & soundness
Assist with stock movements.
Grass checks
Monitoring for pest weeds and animals
Checking of fences and cleaning troughs
Weighing & data collection
Weaner training
Branding (Dehorning, cutting, branding, tagging, needling)
2. Stock Work (to be done in accordance with Low stress stock handling)
Mustering – mainly with horses & bikes
Receiving & trucking cattle
Branding
Weaning
Assisting with weighing & drafting for markets, including data collection
May be seconded to assist at other Stations
KPI
Contented stock with optimal weight gains & happy team
Completing scheduled tasks within timeframe
3. Stock (Horses) Welfare & Performance (can be delegated) - health and nutrition & soundness
Feeding & supplementation
Treat for sickness or injury
Grooming & hoof care
Tack, stable & horse yards maintained
KPI:
Tack, facilities & shed clean & in good condition
Useful plant of horses, well presented at all times
Appropriate inventory of feed & supplements maintained
4. Station Maintenance (in cooperation with Development)
Maintain fencing in good repair, troughs cleaned according to moves
Work area clean – hosed down or blown out
Maintenance of gear, stock handling facilities, and property improvements
General duties include some major installations such as fences, pipelines and waters
Weed control
KPI:
Cleanliness of work vehicles and sheds
Monitor work against Annual Planner
Meeting goals of the maintenance plan
5. Domestic
Responsible for own accommodation and in charge of setting example to juniors of the standard of living.
Contribute the upkeep of the entire station complex
Participate in community activities including active memberships in local committees etc
KPI:
Recognition for contribution to events
Clean and well-presented quarters
Ability to work well alone or with others (communication skills)
Time management & organizational skills
A basic knowledge of, and commitment to holistic Management
Some horse & stock experience; willingness to be trained in Low Stress Stock Handling
A sound understanding and promotion to safe work practices
Some mechanical knowledge and welding skills
Ability to operate loader & bobcat
Sense of humour
