Job Description

  • Murray Downs are seeking a Station Cook to join the team in 2026 and beyond.

  • The Station Cook is responsible for the planning, preparation, and delivery of nutritious meals for 15 station employees and occasional guests. This includes maintaining stock levels, ensuring hygienic kitchen operations, and catering for staff working both on-site and away from the station complex. The role requires excellent organisational skills, the ability to work within budgets, and commitment to maintaining a clean and well - structured kitchen environment. Other duties include working a half-day Saturday in the station store on a rotating roster between other staff.

Murray Downs is a family owned and operated beef breeding property located in the Southern Barkly region of the NT, 200 km south of Tennant Creek. Spanning 1.3 million acres and running 15,000 breeders, we are currently in a development phase that includes water and fencing infrastructure to increase carrying capacity and herd productivity.

Key Tasks, Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement weekly meal plans in consultation with the Station Manager, ensuring a balance of variety, nutrition, and cost-effectiveness.

  • Maintain accurate stock takes of pantry staples, cold-room, and freezer supplies.

  • Ensure the kitchen, cold-room, freezers and pantry are clean, well-organised, and meet hygiene standards, including disposing of rubbish in a timely manner.

  • Upkeep of kitchen surroundings, including outdoor dinning area and butchers room. We pride ourselves in having a clean tidy and well organised operation.

  • Prepare daily meals including smoko, lunch, and dinner as well as occasional desserts for special occasions (eg birthdays, staff farewells).

  • Provide and maintain “grab and go” smoko and lunch containers in the fridge for staff working away from the station complex.

  • Working a half-day on a Saturday in the station store on a rotating roster.

Job Requirements

  • Strong organisation and time management skills.

  • Ability to plan and prepare varied meals including presentation.

  • Knowledge of safe food handling and hygiene practices.

  • Flexibility to cater for different schedules, workloads and dietary needs.

  • Ability to work independently and take initiative.

  • Good communication skills.

  • Sound butchering skills, or knowledge of beef cuts.

Qualifications and Experience

  • First Aid certificate (can be acquired through our training week)

  • Past station cook experience
