Here’s your chance to step into a role that makes a real impact. Station Mechanical Solutions is growing, and we’re looking for an experienced diesel mechanic ready to take the next step as a Field Service Team Leader.

Based in Katherine, NT, this role is a mix of field service and workshop work, with a strong focus on sharing your expertise, mentoring less experienced team members, and helping drive the high standards our clients rely on.

You’ll travel across the Top End, supporting cattle stations and commercial clients, working on a wide variety of gear including:

  • 4x4s & trucks

  • Tractors & earthmoving equipment

  • Motorbikes & telehandlers…and more.

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Has 5–10 years of varied mechanical experience and thrives on challenges

  • Is confident with engine, transmission, and differential rebuilds

  • Holds an automotive air-conditioning licence

  • Excels in diagnostics, auto-electrical work, and problem-solving

  • Enjoys field service because you like being on the move

  • Has a rural background or significant experience working remotely (bonus if you’re already familiar with Toyota Landcruisers!)

Key Tasks, Duties & Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead your Field Service Unit (FSU), supervising and mentoring team members.

  • Ensure the FSU vehicle is maintained, stocked, and ready for remote and local work

  • Monitor safety, fatigue, and wellbeing within your team.

  • Foster a positive, professional team culture aligned with company values.

Customer Service & Communication

  • Liaise with customers before and during site visits to clarify job requirements and confirm progress.

  • Represent the business professionally on-site, building and maintaining strong client relationships through reliability and honesty.

  • Provide clear updates to customers during major repairs or unexpected issues.

  • Relay customer feedback, concerns, or requests to the Service Coordinator or Operations Manager.

Mechanical Duties

  • Perform diagnosis, servicing, repairs and preventative maintenance on a wide range of vehicles and equipment, including:

  • 4WDs, trucks, loaders, graders and plant

  • Motorbikes, quads, buggies, and small engines

  • Generators, welders, compressors, and lighting plants

  • Supervise others assisting in maintenance tasks.

  • Ensure all work is carried out safely, efficiently, and to a high standard.

Administration & Compliance

  • Keep accurate records of job cards, time sheets, and parts usage.

  • Assist with inventory management, consumables, and ordering parts.

  • Contribute to risk management and safety compliance activities.

  • Participate in toolbox talks, training, and safety reviews.

Job Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Trade certificate : required

  • Years of experience: trade plus minimum five years

  • Australian Refrigeration Council refrigerant handling license

  • Open drivers license of Heavy Rigid class or higher

  • Rural background highly regarded

Knowledge

  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems used in cattle stations and commercial operations.

  • In-depth knowledge of safety regulations, risk management, and industry compliance standards.

  • Awareness of best practices in preventative maintenance and diagnostics.

  • Familiarity with logistical planning and remote site operations.

  • Understanding of team leadership principles, workflow management, and performance monitoring.

Skills

  • Advanced mechanical troubleshooting and repair skills across diverse equipment types.

  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and prioritize field service operations efficiently.

  • Competent in using diagnostic tools, software, and technology for field service tasks.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to lead and mentor team members.

  • Problem-solving and decision-making skills under remote or high-pressure conditions.

  • Ability to manage client relationships and maintain high service standards.

This role is a full time position based on an hourly rate, plus bush work allowance and tool allowance.  Six weeks annual leave, uniforms supplied, flexible working arrangements, and staff discount rates.  Affordable accommodation in our staff quarters (if available).
