Job Description

We are seeking a reliable and experienced Senior Livestock Hand to join our busy feedlot team. This is a hands-on role suited to someone who enjoys variety in their day and is diligent in their operations, takes pride in maintaining high standards, and works well within a small team.

Working within a team of approximately 16 across the feedlot, you will undertake a range of cattle tasks in both the feedlot and backgrounding operation.

It’s a dynamic environment which has competing priorities.  We’re looking for someone who can provide guidance and support within the livestock team; and to achieve each day’s objectives efficiently and safely.

Family owned and operated Feedlot; Canning Downs South is a property and business in the picturesque Elbow Valley on the Southern Downs of Queensland. Over time other properties in Queensland and New South Wales have been added to support the business through backgrounding, breeding, and cropping operations.

Key Tasks, Duties & Responsibilities

  • Cattle arrivals and inductions

  • Pen and paddock movements

  • Exit drafting

  • Daily health inspections of pens and paddocks;

  • Treatments and hospital management

  • Undertaking Autopsies

  • General maintenance and upkeep of the feedlot environment

  • Supporting day-to-day operational requirements as needed

Job Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in livestock health and handling, ideally within a feedlot environment.

  • Skills and knowledge in efficient livestock movement techniques and handling

  • Good understanding of cattle health issues within a feedlot environment

  • Strong work ethic and ability to work both independently and within a team

  • Punctual, proactive and energetic

  • Commitment to workplace health and safety

  • Good communication and computer skills

  • Q Fever vaccination is required (or willingness to obtain)

  • Ability to work a 10/4 roster.

  • A ‘C’ class driver’s licence is required for this role, HR licence beneficial

  • Gun Licence Beneficial

  • Remuneration is commensurate with experience. Base hourly rate range depending on experience is $30-$35/hr.
