Agriculture Jobs in Australia

Agriculture is one of Australia’s most important industries, supporting regional communities and producing food and fibre for both domestic consumption and global export markets. From large cattle stations in northern Australia to cropping farms across the southern states and feedlots supplying the premium beef market, the agricultural sector provides thousands of employment opportunities for people looking to build practical careers in rural industries.

Agriculture jobs in Australia cover a wide range of roles and skill levels. Entry level positions often include Farm Hands and Station Hands, where workers assist with day-to-day operations such as livestock handling, fencing, mustering, machinery maintenance and general property work. These roles are commonly found on cattle stations, sheep stations, mixed farms and pastoral properties across Australia and are often the starting point for long-term careers in agriculture.

For those interested in working directly with animals, livestock roles form a major part of the industry. Jobs in this area include stockpersons, livestock managers, animal health technicians and station supervisors. Workers may be responsible for drafting cattle or sheep, monitoring animal health, assisting with breeding programs and ensuring livestock are managed safely and efficiently. Australia’s beef and sheep industries rely heavily on skilled livestock workers to maintain productivity, welfare standards and export supply chains.

A key sector within livestock production is the feedlot industry, which plays a significant role in Australia’s beef supply chain. Feedlots specialise in finishing cattle on grain-based rations before processing, ensuring consistent quality for domestic and international markets. Feedlot jobs include feed truck operators, pen riders, livestock handlers, mill operators and feedlot maintenance staff. Workers in these roles are involved in feeding programs, animal health monitoring, pen maintenance and managing large numbers of cattle in controlled environments. Australia has more than 400 accredited feedlots across the country, with major operations located in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria.

Another major employment area in agriculture is cropping and agronomy. Grain production across regions such as the Western Australian Wheatbelt, the Riverina in New South Wales and Queensland’s Darling Downs requires agronomists, crop scouts, machinery operators and farm technicians. These roles focus on soil management, crop planning, fertiliser programs, pest control and maximising yields through modern farming practices.

Modern agriculture is highly mechanised, which means machinery operators and mechanical specialists are in strong demand across the sector. Large scale farms and stations rely on tractors, harvesters, graders, excavators and other specialised equipment to manage thousands of hectares of land. Skilled machinery operators, diesel mechanics and workshop technicians play a crucial role in keeping agricultural operations running efficiently during busy seasons such as planting, mustering and harvest.

Australia’s agricultural workforce is spread across several major farming regions. The Northern Territory and northern Western Australia are known for vast pastoral cattle stations. Queensland and northern New South Wales support both cattle production and broadacre cropping industries. The Riverina, Murray region and Victorian agricultural zones are major areas for mixed farming, irrigation and livestock production, while Western Australia’s Wheatbelt is one of the largest grain producing regions in the country.

Because of the seasonal and practical nature of farming, agriculture offers opportunities for people entering the workforce, changing careers or seeking hands-on work in regional Australia. Many employers provide accommodation, training and career development opportunities for workers willing to learn and contribute to rural operations.

Whether you are looking for your first farm job, a station hand position on a cattle property, a role in a feedlot, or a specialised career in agronomy or machinery operation, agriculture offers diverse career pathways across Australia’s rural industries.
