Job Description

Apply your sound knowledge of animal biosecurity, livestock diseases and health and welfare issues to ensure strong biosecurity practices in the NT.

The Biosecurity and Animal Welfare team are seeking applicants to fill an ongoing role in Katherine.

As a Livestock Biosecurity Officer, you will provide biosecurity inspection and certification advice and services to manage risks to the Territory economy, environment and public health and support the development of sustainable agribusiness and economic development of the NT. This involves delivering biosecurity services and advice, and administering legislation relating to the NT Livestock Act, 2008.

You will also be required to participate in biosecurity emergency responses and undertake regular travel to remote locations.

Key Tasks, Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Deliver biosecurity services including in-field disease investigation, disease surveillance, disease control, biosecurity certification and animal health and biosecurity extension.

  2. Provide biosecurity advice relating to animal biosecurity in the NT.

  3. Administer the NT Livestock Act, 2008 and other relevant legislation including auditing and investigation of alleged breaches.

  4. Participate in biosecurity emergency responses.

Job Requirements

Essential

  1. Sound knowledge of animal biosecurity, livestock diseases and animal health and welfare issues.

  2. Understanding of the livestock and wider primary production industry in the NT.

  3. Knowledge of relevant legislation including the NT Livestock Act, 2008 and the investigation and compliance process.

  4. Sound verbal and written communication skills to relate effectively to a broad range of the stakeholders and communicate technical and legislative information to industry participants.

  5. Ability to work in teams, self-motivated with demonstrated initiative and sound judgement.

  6. Applicant must have a valid NT firearms licence or the ability to obtain one, and safety and effectively handle farm chemicals

  7. Ability to use office software and databases and IT systems.

Desirable

  1. Qualification at certificate or diploma level or nationally agreed competencies relating to biosecurity, agriculture or animal health. Tertiary studies at associate diploma level or higher is especially desirable.

  2. Certificate IV in Government Investigations.

  3. Experience working in emergency management and emergency animal disease responses.

  4. Familiarity of the National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) and equipment
