Seeking reliable and practical Livestock Hands to support daily cattle activities in a safe, efficient feedlot environment.

This hands-on role suits someone passionate about outdoor work, livestock care, and animal welfare, while valuing teamwork. Experience with horses or motorbikes around stock is highly beneficial, along with essential experience working with beef cattle.

Ideally, candidates will be confident riders and comfortable handling stock both in yards and pens. The position is suitable for those wanting to work some of their own horses, with allowances for personal gear, or for applicants without their own horse or gear.

With a license to feed 20,000 head, the Wallumba feedlot grain finishes the majority of MDH's cattle. After being purchased in 2001, Wallumba has changed MDH from a grass-finishing operation to a backgrounding operation, with 90 per cent of MDH's cattle grain-finished in the feedlot. Wallumba, in addition to Nangram, has provided significant 'drought proofing' capabilities to the MDH operation, ensuring cattle can be finished even when the northern properties experience a dry season.

Key Tasks, Duties & Responsibilities

  • General cattle handling and processing/inducting

  • Using horses to cut out and move cattle around pens

  • Mustering backgrounding paddocks using horses and motorbikes

  • Trucking (loading and unloading cattle)

  • Diagnosing animal health with an emphasis on animal welfare

  • Administration of animal health treatments

  • Maintaining accurate daily records

  • Opportunity to experience other areas of the feedlot when time permits

Job Requirements

  • Proven horsemanship skills –TWO horses and required tack /gear if possible

  • Proven cattle handling skills 

  • A strong commitment to animal welfare

  • You are Q-Fever vaccinated or willing to be

  • Own transport and driver’s license

  • Clean and tidy habits

  • Polite and friendly nature

  • Willing to lend a hand and gain new experiences

  • Willing to work in a team but also individually

  • Willing to listen and act on instructions and advice given

  • Comfortable with starting work early and working in the heat
