Job Description

We are seeking a competent and reliable station hand to join a progressive organic beef enterprise in Western Queensland. While the successful applicant will be based at a separate property and require a high degree of day-to-day autonomy, they will report directly to the managers and work as part of the broader station team.
 
This role is suited to an individual who demonstrates initiative, a strong work ethic, and a genuine willingness to learn. The position offers the opportunity to work with a high level of independence while contributing to a well-managed organic beef enterprise.
 
Note:
  • The role may suit a couple or family seeking a rural lifestyle; however, only one full-time position is on offer. 

  • Minimum 2-3 years of station/livestock experience.

  • Applicants must have full, unrestricted working rights in Australia, this role in not suited to short-term or visa limited applicants.

Walker Cattle Co. is a family owned and operated organic beef breeding and backgrounding business running a predominantly Santa Gertrudis herd across two properties near Blackall, Qld. Trade and agistment cattle are also managed when seasonal conditions allow.

Key Tasks, Duties & Responsibilities

  • Routine inspection and maintenance of waters, fencing, and livestock.

  • Ensuring cattle are maintained in sound health and condition.

  • Mustering operations (primarily motorbike-based; horses acceptable).

  • Drafting, weighing, processing, and vaccination of cattle.

  • Installation and maintenance of water infrastructure.

  • General fencing and property maintenance.

Job Requirements

The successful applicant will be required to work both independently from, and collaboratively with, the team across two properties (90km apart).
 
Selection Criteria:
  • Demonstrated experience in cattle handling and livestock management.

  • Ability to work independently with a high degree of accountability.

  • A commitment to working safely and following safe work practices.

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to livestock welfare.

  • Practical competency in fencing, water systems, and general station duties.

  • Capacity and willingness to travel between properties several times per week (1 hour each way).

  • Current driver’s licence and own reliable vehicle. (For personal use)

  • Minimum 2-3 years of station/livestock experience.

 
Desirable:
  • Experience operating machinery (grader, loader, skid steer).

  • Completion of a Low Stress Stock Handling (LSS) course.

  • Ability to feed budget using SD

  • Truck licence.
