Job Description

We’re looking for an experienced Head Stockman to join the collaborative team at Alexandria Station, reporting to the management team and working alongside other Head Stockman and crews across Alexandria. Leading a crew of seven station hands, you’ll play a key role in keeping the stock camp running smoothly, safely and efficiently. This role calls for someone who is organised, adaptable and always thinking a few steps ahead.

The North Australian Pastoral Company (NAPCo) was founded in 1877 and is one of Australia's leading beef cattle companies, managing over 6.1 million hectares, largest single herd in the world and home to Five Founders Beef. NAPCo employs approximately 220 staff operating across Queensland and the Northern Territory, with 15 cattle stations, a Depot in Mount Isa, a Feedlot and Farm in the Darling Downs and an office in Brisbane's CBD.

Located on the Barkly Tableland in the Northern Territory, Alexandria Station was acquired in 1877 and holds a special place in NAPCo’s 150-year legacy as the company’s founding station. Spanning 700,000 hectares and running approximately 45,000 head of cattle, Alexandria is home to NAPCo’s Alexandria Composite Stud and neighbours NAPCo stations Gallipoli, Mittiebah and Soudan.

Key Tasks, Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead the day-to-day running of the stock camp, keeping operations organised, efficient and on track

  • Coordinate and motivate a crew of station hands, setting clear expectations and leading by example

  • Plan ahead for mustering activities, livestock movements and daily camp requirements

  • Muster and handle cattle confidently on horseback and motorbikes using quiet, sensible stock handling practices

  • Livestock data collection and record keeping

  • Support the safe and effective handling, drafting, processing and movement of livestock

  • Communicate clearly with the Overseer, other Head Stockman and station teams to keep everyone moving in the same direction

  • Pitch in with general station duties, maintenance tasks and whatever else is needed to get the job done

  • Operate machinery, vehicles and trucks from time to time, depending on station requirements

  • Promote a strong safety culture and ensure work is carried out in line with NAPCo’s HSE policies and procedures

Job Requirements

Ideally, you will bring:

  • Experience as a Leading Hand or Head Stockman on a cattle station

  • A practical leadership style with clear, confident communication

  • Quiet, sensible and capable livestock handling skills

  • Strong horsemanship and/or motorbike riding ability

  • Good organisation, planning and record-keeping skills

  • A genuine commitment to working safely in line with NAPCo’s HSE policies and procedures

  • A MR, HR or HC licence, or willingness to obtain one
